How places are ranked

The brity directory shows salons and professionals. This page explains in plain words what decides the order of the list and how much each criterion weighs. It describes what the service actually does.

Nobody pays to rank higher

No salon and no professional can buy a better position, neither with a subscription nor with a commission. The plan a place has chosen does not change its rank. The only thing specific to the visitor is her position, if she allows it.

Who appears

  • A salon appears when its page is published and the salon is active.
  • A professional appears when her page is published and listed in the directory. She appears only once, at the place closest to the search among those that match.
  • A salon and the professionals who work there each have their own listing. An independent who works alone only has her professional listing.

The default order: relevance

Without another choice, the list follows relevance. The criteria are applied in this order: the first one that tells two places apart decides.

  1. How well the place matches the search. A place whose name contains every word typed comes first, then those with a matching treatment, then those whose town, trade or presentation match. With no word typed, all places are equal on this criterion.
  2. The rating. It is a weighted average of the verified brity reviews that takes their number into account: a single 5 out of 5 review does not rank above dozens of reviews at 4.8. A place with no brity review uses its Google rating if brity already knows it, and it is then shown as such. Places with no rating at all come after the rated ones.
  3. The distance, nearest first, when brity knows a starting point: the visitor’s position if she allows it, otherwise the centre of the chosen town. Places with no known position come last.
  4. If everything is equal, a salon comes before a professional, then alphabetical order.

These are not points added up: each criterion only comes into play if the previous one is exactly equal. So the match with the search weighs more than the rating, and the rating more than the distance. In practice, distance only separates places with the same rating, for example those with no reviews yet. To rank by distance, choose the “Distance” sort.

The other sorts

The visitor can choose another sort:

  • Top rated: the rating (same calculation as above), then the number of reviews.
  • Distance: nearest first.
  • Price: cheapest first, based on the cheapest treatment that matches the search.
  • Next available: among the first 30 places by relevance, the one with the earliest free time comes first; the others follow in order of relevance.

What filters, without ranking

Filters (town, trade, treatment, price, day and time, maximum distance, facilities and accessibility of the place, “at home”) remove results; they do not change the order of those that remain. Filtering on a day or a time only keeps the places that have a free time then.

The “Standout places” filter keeps, depending on the box ticked, places rated at least 4.8 over at least 20 brity reviews, or where clients come back: at least 30 clients over the past year, of whom at least 60% came on two or more different days. With both boxes ticked, a place must meet both.

Good deals and last minute

In “Last minute”, the free times closest in time come first, then the cheapest, then those closest to the visitor. In “Good deals”, the biggest savings come first, then the nearest places, then the earliest times.

The “Top 5” and “Top 10” badges

They place a professional in her town based on the number of appointments honoured over 90 days or on her rating (at least 5 reviews). They show a rank, never a figure, and do not change the order of the directory.

In a salon: “No preference”

When you choose “No preference”, brity gives the appointment to a professional of the salon who can do the treatments, works at that time and is free. If several fit, the criteria are applied in this order, the first one that tells them apart decides:

  1. The one who looked after you at your last completed visit to this salon.
  2. The one whose agenda stays the fullest: the appointment that leaves the fewest small gaps, too short to be booked, before and after.
  3. The priority the salon has set for each professional.
  4. The least busy: the number of appointments over the last 28 days, divided by the weight the salon has given her.
  5. Otherwise, a repeatable draw: the same request always gives the same result.
